Die Stadt Ismailia entstand im Zuge des Suezkanalbaus und diente urspr\u00fcnglich als Basislager am Timsahsee. Anf\u00e4nglich als Timsah bezeichnet, wurde der Ort nach der Thronbesteigung von Ismail Pascha 1863 in Ismailia umbenannt. W\u00e4hrend der Bauarbeiten war Ismailia ein wichtiger Knotenpunkt entlang der Suezkanaltrasse und Hauptquartier der Suezkanal-Gesellschaft. Hier wohnten viele aus Europa stammende Beamte, Ingenieure und Kanalbauarbeiter. Sie pr\u00e4gten das Ortsbild und vergaben westliche Stra\u00dfennamen. Die Negrelli Street (auch als Rue Negrelli bekannt) wurde nach dem \u00f6sterreichischen Planer des Suezkanals, Alois Negrelli, benannt.
