Der Pascha hegt das gr\u00f6\u00dfte Interesse f\u00fcr Alles den Suez-Canal betreffend, und der Gedanke an die Selbstausf\u00fchrung dieses grossen Werkes besch\u00e4ftiget ihn fortw\u00e4hrend; es ist jedoch nicht zu zweifeln, da\u00df ihn dieser Gedanke erst von dem Augenblicke an ernstbelebte, als er in Erfahrung brachte, da\u00df Europa, oder eine Privatgesellschaft in Europa, die Absicht hege, den Kanalbau zu \u00fcbernehmen, als auf diese Weise seine Eifensucht rege wurde.
