steam dredge, that the five miles thus to be excavated in the sea, would prove much easier and less'costly of execution than any other equal extent of the whole distance of the proposed Canal.

Having once dredged a channel, the question arises how it could be scoured out, and kept clean ; that matter is discussed and noted at pages 13 and 14 of the tract.

On this point it may be well further to premise, that while a channel is being dredged through the Bay of Tineh, it would be desirable to extend to seaward (at the same time) a breakwater along the Eastern side of the channel, that the current introduced from the Red Sea through the canal, might be continued forward in its course, and so sweep away all materials of mud and silt drifted from the Westward, and at the extremity of the breakwater to erect a lighthouse.

It would be fortunate for such an undertaking, if the difficulties urged by the contributor to the Times newspaper on the subject, constituted the greatest difficulties of the project.
